First introduced in 1968, the disposable tire inflator was used to inflate the space saver spare tires in Mustangs. The spares were stored in the trunk without air in them (to save space in a very cramped trunk area). These were common in Mustangs with a fold down rear seat. The trap door would extend into the trunk and a regular spare tire took too much space. The space savers were also common with Boss 429 cars because of the trunk mounted battery. In addtion, they were also an option for Mustang and Cougar owners as a way to create a little more trunk space. If you have ever looked inside the trunk of a 1971 Mustang, you can understand this.

The bottle measures 11 inches x 3 inches and has a nozzle on the top that fits onto the spare tire valve stem. The canister contains a flourocarbon propellant which inflates the spare tire sufficiently enough to reach a service station. The bottle is a one-time, single-use disposable item that was to be thrown away after it was used. A new bottle was to be purchased from Ford as a replacement.
